DreadTober 2023 Week 3: Dread Poets Society

Hi folks,

Another week has passed and the deadline creeps closer. The number of people who have completely finished their projects is increasing by the day; I am certainly not one of them 😅

Let's take a look at what people have been able to achieve in the past 7 days. As I have mentioned before, if you see something you really like, head over to the corresponding blog or social media and make a real connection. He who stands beside me is my brother!!

Name: Da Masta Cheef
Project: Black Dragons 5th Company Ballistus Dreadnought
Blog: http://dlwdg.blogspot.com/

Da Masta Cheef managed to get some more painting done this week and did some great work with some custom decals. This dread also has a great story behind it, it is a wonderful homage to an old friend. Check out the blog for some extra photos of the dragon decals and the full story.

Name: Neverness
Project: Death Watch Dreadnought (that's right, a classic boxnaught!).
Blog: https://nevernesshobby.blogspot.com/
Twitter/X: @Neverness8

This Deathwatch dread is very closed to being finished now. If you have some ideas for what Neverness should put on the leg scroll, leave it in the comments section.

Name: XarfaiEngel
Project: Blood Angels Legion Castra Ferrum Dreadnought
Stretch Goal: Blood Angels Legion Dreadnought Drop Pod
Blog: https://abutterflyshobbytally.blogspot.com/

XarfaiEngel has been working on the plasma coils and lenses of this Blood Angels Castraferrum Dreadnought. It is looking fantastic and very close to completion!

Name: Sachiel
Project: World Eaters Legion Dreadnaught Talon (2 Boxnaughts).
Blog: https://sachiel-returns.blogspot.com/?m=0

It doesn't look like Sachiel has posted anything for this week yet. I will keep an eye out during the week for any progress and leave you with some side-shots of the lascannon arms; skulls for the skull throne!!

Name: DAM
Project: Dark Angels 5th Company Ballistus Dreadnought
Blog: http://262krieg.blogspot.com/
Instagram: @262_krieg

Work on this glorious beast continues. DAM has been busy working on the lenses and purity seals, with some extra gooey detail added to the base ("Nobody touch nothing." Apone).

Name: Agis
Project: ‘Iron Circle’ Domitar-Ferrum Class Battle-automata
Blog: http://agis40k.blogspot.com/

Agis has continued to work on the metallics, shield detail and weathering on these hulking Battle-automata. I am very excited to see how they will look when the sub-assemblies are brought together.

Name: Thousand Eyes
Dread: Legion of the Damned Redemptor
Blog: www.steppingbetweengames.com

Instagram: @steppingbetweengames

Legion of the Damned models provide that perfect opportunity to go crazy with free-hand details. Take a look at the bones!! So cool.

Name: Cylde
Dread: Bjorn the Fell-Handed (metal) (Atlantida colours)
Instagram: @cyldear

I have mentioned before that I really love this scheme. Well, I'm going to double down on that and say that I love it on this model; it looks fantastic on an older Dreadnought.

Name: Dave Weston
Dread: Tyranid High Rule Dude and 2 Screamer Killers if I'm a good [or naughty] boy!
Blog: www.40kaddict.uk

Dave has been refining the chitin highlights on his dudes. Check out his blog for extra photos of the weapon arms and cheer him on as he prepares for Armies on Parade.

Name: Sincain - Todd
Dread: Raven Guard Contemptor
Blog: https://sincain40k.blogspot.com/

"Reactors online. Sensors online. Weapons online. All systems nominal."

Sincain has hammered the nail in this walking coffin well ahead of schedule, and it looks amazing. Next week I'll share some more photos; there are tons on the blog of all the different weapon variations and details.

Name: David Hardy
Project: Ultramarines Ballistus Dreadnought, 2nd edition style.
(Or maybe a Doom Eagles 3rd company one, I’ll decided when I prime it)
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/spacedcrusader/

I have been watching this one closely because it hits right in the nostalgia. What a glorious finish to the project!! I only hope I can do the same justice to my Dark Angels version.

Name: Wachtmeister
Dread: Bjorn the Fell handed, also in glorious metal!
Blog: https://www.hmgs.org/blogpost/1767208/The-Wachtmeister-s-Patrol

The Wachtmeister is starting to lay down the base colours on this legend of the Space Wolves.

Name: D
Project: Nastrond "arts and crafts" dreadnought
Blog: http://imalonewithadream.blogspot.com
Instagram: @langshan_hexachord

Another project nearing completion, D has laid most of the paint layers down and is working on the weathering and some extra details.

Name: WestRider
Project: Finish the 40K scale Vulture BattleMech that I tried to do for my entry back in '19.
Blog: cascadiangrimdark.blogspot.com

WestRider has been blocking in some camo on this Vulture (Mad Dog), in what I believe is a Ghost Bears colour scheme. I painted some 28 mm 'Mechs in the same scheme for a mate once.

Name: Marc
Project: Deathwing Redemptor Dreadnought
Blog: http://oldschoolg4m1ng.blogspot.com/
Instagram and Twitter: @m4cr0dutch

I have been finding hobby time hard to come by at the moment. This week I managed to finish the sarcophagus and get some decal work done. I feel like there is a lot of work left to do on this project. With only 10 days left, it is time to knuckle down and get it done.

Good luck finishing your projects everyone!!

DreadTober 2023 Week 2: Little Dread Riding Hood

Hi folks,

We are heading towards the midpoint in the challenge, where things tend to get serious for most people. By this stage the majority of construction is complete and painting is well underway. Well... that's the theory, anyway!

Let's take a look at what everyone has been able to achieve over the last 7 days.

Name: Da Masta Cheef
Project: Black Dragons 5th Company Ballistus Dreadnought
Blog: http://dlwdg.blogspot.com/

Da Masta Cheef has been busy this week laying down some metallics. Keep at it mate!! Any progress is good progress.

Name: Neverness
Project: Death Watch Dreadnought (that's right, a classic boxnaught!).
Blog: https://nevernesshobby.blogspot.com/
Twitter/X: @Neverness8

Neverness is working on an old Assault on Black Reach Castraferrum dreadnought. Not much progress since last week, which makes me wonder if this was a tough week for everyone!

Name: XarfaiEngel
Project: Blood Angels Legion Castra Ferrum Dreadnought
Stretch Goal: Blood Angels Legion Dreadnought Drop Pod
Blog: https://abutterflyshobbytally.blogspot.com/
Instagram: @xarfaiengel

After some decals and an oil wash, this beautiful Blood Angels dreadnought is starting to come to life. There is a lot of detail and highlights left to go, but it is already looking every bit the regal warrior we would expect from Sanguinius' legion.

Name: Sachiel
Project: World Eaters Legion Dreadnaught Talon (2 Boxnaughts).
Blog: https://sachiel-returns.blogspot.com/?m=0

The extra detail Sachiel has added to these World Eater Dreadnoughts is amazing. Their allegiance to the Lord of Skulls is unmistakable.

Name: DAM
Project: Dark Angels 5th Company Ballistus Dreadnought
Blog: http://262krieg.blogspot.com/
Instagram: @262_krieg

DAM has really left me in the dust with this one! I will have it up on my screen this week as I paint my own Dark Angels Ballistus, for inspiration. Take a look at his blog for some extra photographs, it looks fantastic.

Name: Agis
Project: ‘Iron Circle’ Domitar-Ferrum Class Battle-automata
Blog: http://agis40k.blogspot.com/

These giant murder-bots are coming along nicely, as we would expect from a hobbyist as skilled as Agis. A real joy to read about the process used to bring these to life.

Name: Thousand Eyes
Dread: Legion of the Damned Redemptor
Blog: www.steppingbetweengames.com

Painting the flames on Legion of the Damned models is both the fun and challenging. Some really nice free-hand work here.

Name: Cylde
Dread: Bjorn the Fell-Handed (metal) (Atlantida colours)
Instagram: @cyldear

Cylde is simply nailing this scheme like always. It is so inspiring to see how much progress people can achieve in such a short period of time.

Name: Dave Weston
Dread: Tyranid High Rule Dude and 2 Screamer Killers if I'm a good [or naughty] boy!
Blog: www.40kaddict.uk

Dave has been working on some chitin highlights, which is always a bit of a slog for his Tyranids. They look so good though!! Check out his blog for some more progress shots, particularly the weapon arms. Have I mentioned that 'Nids have too many arms?!

Name: Sincain - Todd
Dread: Raven Guard Contemptor
Blog: https://sincain40k.blogspot.com/

Sincain's Contemptor looks just about finished, even after a last minute weapon glow change. Deciding the colour for weapon glow effects is something that keeps me awake at night some times. The multimelta looks like a great alternative as well and the glow on the powerfist is fantastic!

Name: Danforth Laertes
Dread: Rubble-clearing Dreadnought constructed by Richard Maze-Wall of the Winter Lions to help excavate the reputed Tintagel fragment of Caliban (probably it's just an asteroid, lol)
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/danforth_laertes/

No progress from Danforth that I can see this week, but he is a prolific painter. I will be keeping an eye out for him during the week to see if he gets any paint on this beast.

Name: David Hardy
Project: Ultramarines Ballistus Dreadnought, 2nd edition style.
(Or maybe a Doom Eagles 3rd company one, I’ll decided when I prime it)
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/spacedcrusader/

It is wonderful to see those eye-popping yellows get worked into the scheme. That is what the 2nd Edition paint schemes were all about, looking for opportunities to use those bright colours. Great progress!

Name: Wachtmeister
Dread: Bjorn the Fell handed, also in glorious metal!
Blog: https://www.hmgs.org/blogpost/1767208/The-Wachtmeister-s-Patrol

Wachtmeister has managed to finish constructing his metalnaught and is planning to get it on the paint table next week. I am really looking forward to this one. Oh, and if you happen to have a spare banner for Bjorn, please let me know.

Name: D
Project: Nastrond "arts and crafts" dreadnought
Blog: http://imalonewithadream.blogspot.com
Instagram: @langshan_hexachord

"Those Sago marines directly associated with the chapter's librarius must also endure the... changes that come over their wargear, the very essence of Nastrond's corpse-lakes from which their psychic power is drawn from."

Name: WestRider
Project: Finish the 40K scale Vulture BattleMech that I tried to do for my entry back in '19.
Blog: cascadiangrimdark.blogspot.com

WestRider got the ball rolling this week, working on the details of the base and doing some remodeling of the heat sink vanes.  A Vulture is a real work-horse of a Mech in BattleTech; it gets the job done.

Name: Marc
Project: Deathwing Redemptor Dreadnought
Blog: http://oldschoolg4m1ng.blogspot.com/
Instagram and Twitter: @m4cr0dutch

My progress has been absolutely minimal this week. I managed to prime the pieces of my Ballistus and spent a little bit of time surfing through my bitz boxes, but that was it. I am hoping to get it on the paint table tomorrow and start laying down some base colours.

As I keep saying, any progress is a win. Thanks for all of your efforts this week and I look forward to seeing how we are all going at the end of the week. Good luck!!

DreadTober 2023 Week 1: Dread Storm Rising Part 2

Hi folks,

Thanks for your patience! Let's jump straight back in and take a look at some more Week 1 progress from across the internet.

Danforth has performed some incredible conversions, including a mind-boggling Imperial Knight last year for DreadTober. This year he is working on a Dreadnought doing some construction work and it is already living up to expectations.

Name: David Hardy
Project: Ultramarines Ballistus Dreadnought, 2nd edition style.
(Or maybe a Doom Eagles 3rd company one, I’ll decided when I prime it)
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/spacedcrusader/

David is a fellow old school 40K fan, who is responsible for some really beautiful 40k projects that tap into 90's hobby nostalgia. I am beyond excited to see how this one pans out!

Name: Wachtmeister
Dread: Bjorn the Fell handed, also in glorious metal!
Blog: https://www.hmgs.org/blogpost/1767208/The-Wachtmeister-s-Patrol

Another fellow old school hobbyist, the Wachtmeister has been working on a 2nd Edition Space Wolves collection for a while now. With a busy week preparing for an event, he hasn't have much time to work on his Dreadnought yet, but he is also not one to falter in the face of a challenge (...or a curse...). I'm looking forward to seeing this one added to the pack.

Name: D
Project: Nastrond "arts and crafts" dreadnought
Blog: http://imalonewithadream.blogspot.com
Instagram: @langshan_hexachord

I never quite know what to expect when I take a look at D's newest art. Just taking a look at the materials he has been gathering for this project is both surprising and familiar. I have no idea where this project is going, but it will be fun finding out :-)

Name: WestRider
Project: Finish the 40K scale Vulture BattleMech that I tried to do for my entry back in '19.
Blog: cascadiangrimdark.blogspot.com

It's great to have WestRider along for the challenge this year. As a fellow BattleTech fan, I am looking forward to seeing this awesome 'Mech come to life (I may even paint a small one myself in solidarity!).

Name: Marc
Project: Deathwing Redemptor Dreadnought
Blog: http://oldschoolg4m1ng.blogspot.com/
Instagram and Twitter: @m4cr0dutch

Despite being on holidays, I haven't found much time to work on my project this week. Thankfully, the new Ballistus Dreadnought is very simple to construct, so I was at least able to get the main sub-assemblies built. Hopefully during the week I can get some sneaky paint sessions in! I also need to squeeze some Dark Angels flavour in their somewhere...

Thanks for all your hard work everyone and good luck with your Dreadnoughts this week. We'll catch up again in a couple of days!

DreadTober 2023 Week 1: Dread Storm Rising Part 1

Hi folks,

I hope you have all had a productive first week of the challenge. It is time to take a look at some progress shots from all around the net. I'll be splitting this week's digest into two parts, as I am running short on time today. I am currently preparing for a games day near Sydney to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of 2nd Edition 40K!

As always, if you see something that you like, that really inspires you, please feel free to visit the hobbyists blog or social media profile and make a real connection.

If for some reason I have missed your progress photos, or you would like to join the challenge, just let me know in the comments.

Here we go...

Name: Da Masta Cheef
Project: Black Dragons 5th Company Ballistus Dreadnought
Blog: http://dlwdg.blogspot.com/

Da Masta Cheef has hit the ground running and has completed construction and priming of this Ballistus Dread. It is great to see some characteristic Black Dragon spikey bits on there.

Name: Neverness
Project: Death Watch Dreadnought (that's right, a classic boxnaught!).
Blog: https://nevernesshobby.blogspot.com/
Twitter/X: @Neverness8

Progress is progress!! Neverness has touched up the undercoat and base on this venerable boxnaught, so now it is ready to go with a paint scheme.

Name: XarfaiEngel
Project: Blood Angels Legion Castra Ferrum Dreadnought
Stretch Goal: Blood Angels Legion Dreadnought Drop Pod
Blog: https://abutterflyshobbytally.blogspot.com/
Instagram: @xarfaiengel

XarfaiEngel has been painting some beautiful Blood Angels for a while now, and this Dread is living up to expectations. I have good feelings about this one; that's some great progress after only one week.

Name: Sachiel
Project: World Eaters Legion Dreadnaught Talon (2 Boxnaughts).
Blog: https://sachiel-returns.blogspot.com/?m=0

Sachiel has been busy modelling the heck out of this Dreadnought. It is not fully constructed yet but you can already see the brutal nature of the World Eaters coming to life.

Name: DAM
Project: Dark Angels 5th Company Ballistus Dreadnought
Blog: http://262krieg.blogspot.com/
Instagram: @262_krieg

DAM is really leading the way with this Ballistus Dreadnought. I am painting one of these too and I can already see we have similar ideas about how to paint it. It is sooo good to see Dark Angels with red guns again; awesome work!!

Name: Agis
Project: ‘Iron Circle’ Domitar-Ferrum Class Battle-automata
Blog: http://agis40k.blogspot.com/

Working with Forge World resin is a slightly different kettle of fish, so Agis has been putting in the hard yards getting these figures prepped and ready to paint.

Name: Thousand Eyes
Dread: Legion of the Damned Redemptor
Blog: www.steppingbetweengames.com

I have a real soft spot for the Legion of the Damned, they were my first army back in the 90's and I recently painted a collection of them for a 2nd Ed. Army challenge. The idea of them being brought into the modern era of Primaris Marines and Redemptor Dreads is exciting as heck.

Name: Cylde
Dread: Bjorn the Fell-Handed (metal) (Atlantida colours)
Instagram: @cyldear.

Cylde's Atlantida Dreadnoughts have been fantastic additions to the DreadTober galleries the past couple years. I'm looking forward to seeing how the bright paint scheme look son this classic model.

Name: Dave Weston
Dread: Tyranid High Rule Dude and 2 Screamer Killers if I'm a good [or naughty] boy!
Blog: www.40kaddict.uk

Dave has been working on a clutch of Tyranid beasties, including an enormous Dude and two of the new Screamer Killers. I feel his pain when he talks about having to paint so many limbs; Nids have altogether too many gribbly bits :-)

Name: Sincain - Todd
Dread: Raven Guard Contemptor
Blog: https://sincain40k.blogspot.com/

Sincain (Todd) is one of the fathers of DreadTober, along with Greggles (Greg). It is great to have him back in 2023, working on a Raven Guard Contemptor. It is certainly not the kind of Dreadnought you see every day and the progress is already impressive.

I'll try and get Part 2 finished tomorrow night here in Australia. Until then, thanks to everyone who has posted their progress and I wish you all the best as you start to paint your Dreadnoughts!

DreadTober 2023 has Begun!!

Hi folks,

The challenge has officially started and I have already spotted some great progress on various blogs and social media platforms. If you are posting, make sure to use the #DreadTober2023 tag to help other challengers find your hard work.

Thanks to all of those people who have posted their entries, either as comments or using the contact form. I will be checking for weekly progress photos after each Friday deadline, so make sure you have something up before then if you want to make the weekly digest. It is not too late to join in either, just comment with your project and details.

This year I am working on a Dark Angels Ballistus Dreadnought. It has been a while since I have built a big modern kit, the Redemptor I did 12 months ago was probably my most recent. The Ballistus looks quite simple to put together, so I'll have to see what I can add to it through kitbashing with some Dark Angels bitz. I don't want it to look as detailed as my Redemptor, but a few odds and ends will help it fit in with the rest of my collection.

Good luck with your projects this week everyone!!
