October DreadLine Approaches!

Hi folks,

The deadline for the DreadTober challenge is swiftly approaching, so it is time to put in that big final effort to get your project over the finish line! I will be splitting the final progress across two posts, which I will start assembling on the 1st of November here in Australia. My aim is to be as inclusive as possible, so I will be trying to post shots for as many finished projects as possible.

I also wanted to share with everyone the efforts of Mike Munson from the Warhammer 40K MeWe community. He does an excellent job of making us all feel slow, whenever we have a challenge running in the group. To put it simple, he is a prolific painter of warhammer miniatures! Last year he completed multiple DreadTober projects and this year has been no different. Take a look at some of his finished projects from the past month:

If you are like me and have been slogging away at completing one Dreadnought this year, I'm sure you will agree that finishing six to this quality is a great effort. Congratulations Mike, you have done a fantastic job! Good luck to you all over the next couple of days, as you add the final touches to your projects. I look forward to seeing them all.

DreadTober 2021 Week 3: Evil Dread III

Hi folks,

With Week 3 of the challenge behind us, people are gearing up for the final onslaught! The final week of the challenge is a time for miracles and burning the midnight oil. I know from experience that many projects are only pulled together at the very last moment, in a flurry of superglue fumes, basing grit and decal MicroSet. Let's take a look at where everyone is up to before they make the final dash for the finish line.

Name: Agis
Project: Armiger Warglaive
Website: http://agis40k.blogspot.com/

Agis is adding some blue details to this characterful chaos Warglaive. This is one of the best Warglaive conversions I have seen, so I am really looking forward to seeing it finished.

Name: Danforth Laertes
Project: Sister of Battle Machaenix Canonical walky-repairing-fixie-machine-with-legs
Warhammer 40K group on MeWe

Danforth's incredible machine continues to plod towards completion (on six enormous legs!). I love seeing extreme kit-bashes like this.

Name: Dave Weston
Project: 2 Armiger Helverins
Website: www.40kaddict.uk

Dave has been hard at work adding detail to the carapace, legs and bases of his Helverins. The colour on these is just incredible. Having followed his projects for a number of years now, I just know that these models will be an incredible addition to his Imperial Knights. Inspiring stuff!

Name: Dr the Viking
Project: space marine dread
Website: www.c0wabunga.com
Instagram: oldhammer_c0wabunga

The good doctor has finished his project, but is waiting for the last week to reveal the finished product.

Name: Neverness
Project: Deathwatch Venerable Dreadnought
Website: https://nevernesshobby.blogspot.com

Neverness has been adding details to the Venerable Dreadnought's sarcophagus and helmet.

Name: Floyd Lawton
Project: Dark Angels Venerable Dreadnought
Website: https://1stlegionchronicles.blogspot.com/

Floyd is getting really close to finishing now and the Dreadnought is a real beauty! We have always been lucky with the amount of conversion bits the Dark Angels range has to offer. I have to admit though, that the piece that first drew my attention on this model was the old school boltgun on the base!

Name: Siph
Project: Necron Canoptek Doomstalker
Website: https://weemen.blogspot.com/

Siph has been working on the carapace of a Canoptek Doomstalker and added a (very well painted!) Space Marine casualty to the base.

Name: DAM
Project: Custodes Telemon Dreadnought with all the fixin's
Website: https://262krieg.blogspot.com/

DAM is also getting close to finishing a Telemon Dreadnought with multiple weapons options. The white details on the carapace armour are beautiful! I'm looking forward to seeing how the base looks when it is finished, as it also has some cool little modelling details.

Name: D
Project: Macro Terminator
Instagram: langshan_hexachord

D puts the Dread in DreadTober. That's all I can say.

Name: Gerard
Project: Ultramarine Redemptor Dreadnought
Instagram: sharpegerard

Gerard is starting to feel the pressure of the looming deadline. There is a lot of work left to be done on this Ultramarine Redmeptor, but I think you will agree that the modelling work is fantastic! Here is the commentary from his Instagram post:

"Malcades, who now is entombed in the shell of a Redemptor Dreadnought, hands down retribution during The Plague Wars of the Era Indomitus in the Realm of Ultramar."

Name: Mike
Project: Eldar Dreadnought
Instagram: grimslath
Website: https://www.facebook.com/Heavy-Metal-Wars-Wargaming-Chronicles-149218369061794/

Mike has completed work on this majestic, old school, Eldar Dreadnought. These things were the bane of my existence back in 2nd Edition (amongst many other Eldar units...). I'll post some additional shots next week.

Name: Cylde
Project: two primaris redemptor dreadnoughts
Instagram: cyldear

Cylde's Redemptors are looking absolutely amazing, with the addition of some neat urban-themed bases. I'll have to post some more close-up shots of these next week for the finale!

Name: EBPminis
Project: Chaos Dread
Instagram: EBP_mini-painting

EBPminis has finished the Chaos Dreadnought! This sculpt is a fan-made homage to the old Rogue Trader era Chaos Dreadnought, retaining the creepy aesthetic but adding some bulk to the scale. Fantastic work!!

Name: Joe M.
Project: Pair of Raptors space marine dreadnoughts (and maybe their Drop Pod transports...)
Blog: https://www.joesavestheday.com/

Joe has been adding extra details to a pair of Raptors dreadnoughts, including some extra red spot colour. The drop pod is coming along nicely as well; those hazard stripes are fantastic!

Name: Allen
Project: Deathwing Redemptor Dreadnought
Instagram: Malis_hobbyspot

Allen has been making some great progress on the colour and detail of this Deathwing Redemptor. I particularly love the use of the Ravenwing Dark Talon parts on the back. Very cool!

Name: Elvis
Project: Legion of the Damned Dreadnought
Website: https://www.instagram.com/emperors_court/

This old school Legion of the Damned project really warms the heart. Elvis is aiming to paint the base to look like lava, which will suite the project perfectly, I think. I'm painting Legion of the Damned for the 2nd Edition Army challenge later this year, so I will be looking at this one very closely.

Name: Marc
Project: Armiger Warglaive
Website: http://oldschoolg4m1ng.blogspot.com/
Instagram: & Twitter: m4cr0dutch

I have managed to paint the torso and legs, including some (blessed) verdigris on the bronze details. I even managed some quick and dirty free-hand on the shoulder pads, which is a unifying feature amongst all of my Imperial Knights.  Next I will be working on the weapons and the base, though I am still not sure at this stage what colour to paint the sword...

Thanks to everyone for their progress shots. If I missed you, or you were running a little late, let me know in the comments and I will add some more shots during the week. A huge thanks to Dave from 262Krieg, whose Dark Angel Contemptor features in this weeks banner. Groovy!

The deadline is only 7 days away! The Week 4 progress may need to be split across two posts, as I really want to show everyone the detail on these projects from different angles. Good luck everyone!

DreadTober 2021 Week 2: Dread 3D

Hi folks,

The second week of the challenge is behind us and work continues on a diverse range of Dreadnought-themed projects. Towards the end of last week we had some late entries to the challenge, which are always welcome; it is not too late to enter!

I have had a busy week, as Sydney residents are finally given some more freedom to move around. I only managed to put down some basic layers on my Warglaive, but any progress is a victory. For most people, me included, the following week is going to be about accelerating progress. Let's take a look at where we stand at he half-way mark:

Name: Agis
Project: Armiger Warglaive
Website: http://agis40k.blogspot.com/

Agis has continued with the construction of a converted Warglaive, adding damage and chaos growths.

Name: Danforth Laertes
Project: Sister of Battle Machaenix Canonical walky-repairing-fixie-machine-with-legs
Warhammer 40K group on MeWe

Danforth is still working on constructing his Sister of Battle walker. A huge amount of work has gone into converting this thing, I am really looking forward to seeing it painted.

Name: Dave Weston
Project: 2 Armiger Helverins
Website: www.40kaddict.uk

Dave has started adding some of his trademark style to the Armiger he has been working on. I have to say I'm envious of the those chevrons :-)

Name: Dr the Viking
Project: space marine dread
Website: www.c0wabunga.com
Instagram: oldhammer_c0wabunga

Dr the Viking has been adding fine detail to his Space Marine Dreadnought, including some lightning motifs. I find lightning very difficult to do on a model, I think I may have done it successfully once (in 27 years...). Nice work!

Name: Neverness
Project: Deathwatch Venerable Dreadnought
Website: https://nevernesshobby.blogspot.com

Neverness is still constructing the Venerable Dreadnought, with some additional weaponry options.

Name: Floyd Lawton
Project: Dark Angels Venerable Dreadnought
Website: https://1stlegionchronicles.blogspot.com/

Floyd has all the base colours down now and is about to embark on the washes and highlights. On his blog, he described this stage of the project as being on the crest of a wave. I have also heard it described as "the ugly stage", the stage where projects may look worse than they did before they had paint on them! Many beginner painters only get up to this stage. I call the next stage "the prestige"; fans of the movie will know what I am talking about. Enjoy it!

Name: Siph
Project: Necron Canoptek Doomstalker
Website: https://weemen.blogspot.com/

Siph has made some great progress adding to main base colours to this Doomstalker, including some experimentation with weathering powders on the base detail. There has even been some talk of a Space Marine casualty being worked on... could it be a Primaris Lieutenant I wonder (plenty more where that came from!).

Name: DAM
Project: Custodes Telemon Dreadnought with all the fixin's
Website: https://262krieg.blogspot.com/

DAM is more advanced in progress, having put down some washes and edge highlights. These deft touches are time consuming, but what really make the details on a model stand out. Beauty is in the contrast ;-) Also, I can't believe how chonky this boi is.

Name: D
Project: Macro Terminator
Instagram: langshan_hexachord

D has most of the colours down now, with tidying up and detail work to do. A hesitate to use the word "detail" when talking about D's projects (one of which I own, having commissioned it a few years ago). D does not paint detail like most people paint detail. Where I do washes, glazes and hard-lining, D summons shadows, inflicts wounds, stains with hive entropy, imposes the gruelling march of eons...

Name: Gerard
Project: Ultramarine Redemptor Dreadnought
Instagram: sharpegerard

Gerard messaged me during the week to say he got a little distracted. All I can say is, you have come to the right place, mate! Gerard was distracted painting this Nurgle Daemon Prince proxy from Titan Forge. It fits the bill, so counts as an additional entry to DreadTober!

Name: Mike
Project: Eldar Dreadnought
Instagram: grimslath
Website: https://www.facebook.com/Heavy-Metal-Wars-Wargaming-Chronicles-149218369061794/

Mike has also added most of the layers to his old school Eldar Dreadnought. A solid start to the project at the half-way point!

Name: Cylde
Project: two primaris redemptor dreadnoughts
Instagram: cyldear

Cylde has been adding some more fine detail and highlights to the two Redemptor Dreadnoughts. These twin dreads are going to looking awesome!

Name: EBPminis
Project: Chaos Dread
Instagram: EBP_mini-painting

I had good (well... bad) feelings about this project when I saw the incredible sculpt. Now it is looking grim/dark as heck. Incredible!

Name: Rich S.
Project: Blight Hauler
Warhammer 40K group on MeWe

Rich has been adding some fine detail to the Blight Hauler, increasing its ghoulishness. I think it looking excellent so far!

Name: Randy S
Project: Ultramarines dreadnought
Warhammer 40K group on MeWe

Randy is still working on his Dreadnought, but has a bunch of other projects on the boil at the same time, by the looks of it. It will be interesting to see how it is going next week.

Name: Joe M.
Project: Pair of Raptors space marine dreadnoughts (and maybe their Drop Pod transports...)
Blog: https://www.joesavestheday.com/

Joe has been working on some basing, extra details and decals on the pair of Raptors. It looks like there are some hazard stripes in the future of these models, which should be a real challenge.

Name: Mike
Project: Inquisitorial Sentinel
Blog: battlespecterblog.com

Mike hasn't posted any recent progress, so I thought I would share a second project on Mike's table. I'll check back during the week and update any additional progress I find.

Name: Allen
Project: Deathwing Redemptor Dreadnought
Instagram: Malis_hobbyspot

I saw Allen's Dreadnought on the Facebook Dark Angels group and asked if he would like to join us for the challenge. This is a model I would love to be working on myself!

Name: Elvis
Project: Legion of the Damned Dreadnought
Website: https://www.instagram.com/emperors_court/

A classic metal dreadnought, reborn into the Emperors Legion of the Damned!

Name: Marc
Project: Armiger Warglaive
Website: http://oldschoolg4m1ng.blogspot.com/
Instagram: & Twitter: m4cr0dutch

I have only managed to finish the spray undercoat and first blue layers on the torso and legs. I will be working on the torso a bit more today, adding sepia wash, bronze/verdigris and carbon scoring on the exhaust.

Thanks to everyone who posted their progress this week, it is great fun surfing through all of the social media accounts and blogs collecting these photos and reading about the journey each person is on. I encourage you to visit some people online and leave some comments to spur them on.

A big shout out to Siph from WeeMen, whose old school Relictor Dreadnought features in the title banner this week. I'll try and feature a few more previous projects over the next couple of weeks. I also have a special progress report from Mike Munson, a mate from the 40K MeWe group. He was prolific last year and has already finished a couple of models for DreadTober which I will share with you all.

Until then, good luck with your projects everyone!
